Director, Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Shared Resource
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
This Director position supervises the operations of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR) of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Under the direction of the SCCC Associate Director for Shared Resources, the Director of the BBSR interfaces with faculty, clinicians, trainees and students in support of their projects, and with the leaders of the other Sylvester Shared Resources and of other shared research resources at the university and at external institutions. Responsibilities include evaluation, implementation and optimization of existing and emerging biostatistics and bioinformatics software applications and scientific computing infrastructure to enhance support of cancer center research programs. To achieve this, the Director will supervise biostatisticians, bioinformaticians and programming staff, implement and maintain scientific computing equipment, develop and monitor standard operating and quality assurance procedures, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide consultation and support on project design, data management, data analysis, and visualization of results. Key responsibilities include tracking usage statistics and quality assessments and reporting on the financial and technical status, achievements and challenges, and scientific impact of the shared resource. Responsibilities also include involvement in grant proposals that support the shared resource and the projects of the facility users.
The leader of the SCCC Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Shared Resource will conduct their own methodological research, support the research of a wide array of investigator groups, and:
Lead the SCCC Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Shared Resource (BBSR), including personnel management, financial and operations management, and overall administrative oversight of the BBSR.
Ensure that the BBSR provides a high level of biostatistics and bioinformatics services to the SCCC research and clinical communities.
Evaluate, implement, and optimize existing and emerging biostatistics and bioinformatics analysis protocols, pipelines, technologies, and applications to support SCCC investigators. Identify and implement software and analytical platforms for SCCC investigators.
Develop and update standard operating protocols. Implement sustainable and coordinated biostatistics and bioinformatics analysis support for a diverse array of SCCC Shared Resources in areas that include genomics and epigenomics, spatial multi-omics, flow cytometry, imaging, clinical and community-based research, cancer modeling, and molecular therapeutics. Contribute to designing and implementing large-scale data sharing solutions.
Facilitate the scalability of resources and services by contributing to the implementation of software solutions that automate both established and new pipelines and deploy these via intuitive interfaces.
Provide technical training on biostatistics and bioinformatics analysis applications for both the staff and the users of the shared resource.
Determine metrics for quality assessment and track quality of services; set fees for services; participate in developing and monitoring the budget of the shared resource; create and present reports on the operations, finances, usage, and future plans of the shared resource.
Responsible for performance evaluation and training of the shared resource’s staff.
Educate the research community about BBSR resources and services by giving presentations on campus and at scientific and technical conferences.
Lead and collaborate on grant proposals related to biostatistics and/or bioinformatics analyses.
Collaborate with other faculty to obtain research funding from federal and non-federal sources for trans-disciplinary research.
Ph.D. degree with specific graduate training in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related discipline.
Evidence of high-impact publications.
Effective oral and written communications.
Demonstrated ability to lead innovative research projects to successful conclusions.
Experience with supervising a team in a shared resource environment is preferred.
