The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions – the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health.
The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers.
The Operating Room of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) consists of 10 operating suites and 1 cystoscopy room. All surgical procedures are performed in these rooms, including trauma and ambulatory surgery. A staffed operating suite is available for the critically injured trauma patient 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Elective surgery is performed between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with trauma and/or emergency surgery performed on an as-needed basis. The Operating Room provides 24/7 scrub person coverage to the Labor and Delivery Unit for non- emergent and emergency Cesarean sections. The unit does not care for radiation therapy implants. The unit performs an average of 600 procedures per month. ZSFG has a full service OR excluding only elective open heart and organ transplant surgery. The unit provides services for patients of all ages from neonate through elderly.
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse in the Perioperative Nursing specialty performs professional nursing duties. Essential functions include:
Providing nursing care to acutely ill patients within the Operating Room;
Implementing medical care plans;
Directing and supervising the patent care provided by nursing personnel assigned to the unit;
Maintaining standard unit activities in the absence of the Head Nurse ; and
Performing other related duties as assigned/required.
1. Possession of a valid permanent/temporary (including interim permit) California Registered Nurse License; AND
2A. Two (2) years of verifiable experience (equivalent to 4,000 hours) within the last three (3) years as a Registered Nurse in an operating room in an acute care hospital OR 2B. Six (6) months of verifiable experience (equivalent to 1,000 hours) as a Registered Nurse in an operating room in an acute care hospital within the last two (2) years AND a Certificate of completion of AORN Periop 101 AND 3. Must be able to scrub and circulate
The above minimum qualifications reflect special conditions associated with the position(s) to be filled. They may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this classification.
Note: One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate Requirement/Provision: Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment for all positions. Eligibles who do not possess such a certification may participate in this examination process and be appointed to a position(s), but will be required to obtain the certificate within two (2) weeks of hire date and maintain validity throughout length of employment. A photocopy of the valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate must be provided to the appropriate supervisor of the appointment within the allotted time frame. Failure to demonstrate/show proof of possession of valid certification within two (2) weeks of hire date and throughout length of employment may result in dismissal and/or termination of employment.

California Registered Nurse (RN) Licenses
Condition of Employment: Highest Educational Achievement Due to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment 1988, all applicants who are selected for a position will be required to provide verification of highest level of education achieved. Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
1. Have earned a doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science (including nursing), or medical technology from an accredited institution; OR
2. Have earned an associate degree in a chemical, physical or biological science (including nursing)or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) (Weight: Qualifying): Candidates will be required to submit an MQSQ at any point in the application, examination or departmental selection process. Training and Experience Evaluation/Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) (Weight: 100%): The SQ will be sent to those qualified candidates who demonstrate to meet the minimum qualifications. Candidates will be required to submit the completed SQ in the time frame indicated and responses on the SQ cannot be changed once submitted. A passing score must be achieved on the SQ in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List. Candidates will be placed in rank order according to their final score on the SQ. After the confidential eligible list/score report is adopted, the department may administer additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. The SQ is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.
